Human Nature November 9, 2007

What are we by nature?

We are part of God’s creation, made in the image of

I have never read the phrase “made in the image of God” and not found myself utterly confused. I want to know what that means, and no answer satisfies the question. When I was younger, my teachers told me that God was male. So how could I be in His own image? Their answer was that we are in His image in spirit. That answer did not satisfy me. Does a spirit have an image? I was lead to believe that the spirit was not like a person. So now my spirit and myself were divided? The church taught me that the spirit was good and the flesh was evil. Everything to do with the physical was corrupt and wrong. Later I was taught that the previous idea was gnosticism, and gnosticism was bad.
So now my physical self is good and part of creation, just as my soul is. So, was it all created in God’s image? To further confuse me, I came to the understanding that God is neither male, female, or any type of gender that could be conceived. In fact, our Creator is inconceivable. I became closer to the Orthodox thought that God is unknowable and only knowable through what God is not, because language is limited.
So being completely confused, I wonder if we must define our nature as what we are not.

What does it mean to be created in the image of God?
Why do we live apart from God and out of harmony with creation?
Why do we not use our freedom as we should?
What help is there for us?
How did God first help us?
